Osteopathy at APARC Health & Motion is hands-on, holistic manual therapy that addresses the body as an integrated system. Our osteopathic treatment covers back and neck pain, joint dysfunction and headaches, alongside the wider musculoskeletal patterns that contribute to them.
What osteopathy is
Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy. An osteopath assesses how your joints, muscles and connective tissue move together, then uses hands-on techniques — including mobilisation, stretching and manipulation — to address restrictions in movement and the way one area of the body affects another.
It is not a replacement for medical diagnosis or investigation. If your symptoms need imaging, medication or a specialist opinion, we will say so and help you get to the right clinician.
What we treat
At APARC, osteopathic manipulation is used for:
- Back pain and neck pain
- Joint dysfunction and restricted movement
- Headaches associated with neck and postural problems
- Musculoskeletal patterns contributing to recurring pain
What happens at your first appointment
- History. We ask about your symptoms, how they started, your general health, and anything that makes them better or worse.
- Assessment. We look at posture and movement, and examine the areas involved.
- Explanation. We tell you what we think is going on and what we would suggest — including when osteopathy is not the right answer.
- Treatment and a plan. Hands-on treatment where appropriate, plus what to do between appointments.
Wear comfortable clothing you can move in, and bring any scans, reports or referral letters you already have.
Osteopathy or physiotherapy?
There is considerable overlap, and at APARC both sit within the same team. In practice the choice depends on your problem and your preference, and the two are often combined. If you are unsure which to book, ask us — we would rather direct you correctly than treat you inappropriately.
When to seek medical advice first
Please speak to a doctor before booking manual therapy if you have any of the following:
- Severe pain after a fall, accident or injury
- Unexplained weight loss, fever, or pain that is constant and unrelieved by rest
- New weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control
- A known or suspected fracture, or a diagnosis of osteoporosis or bone disease
- You are taking anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medication
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
No. You can book an osteopathy appointment with us directly. If we think you need a medical opinion first, we will tell you.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies with the problem, how long you have had it and your general health. Your osteopath will discuss a plan with you after the first assessment rather than committing you to a fixed number in advance.
Is osteopathic treatment painful?
Treatment should not be painful, though some techniques can feel firm and it is common to feel mild soreness for a day or so afterwards. Tell your osteopath at any point if something is uncomfortable.
