“Neuro rehabilitation” is a term you may hear after a stroke, spinal cord injury or other neurological condition – but what does it actually mean, and who needs it? Here is a clear explanation.

What is neuro rehabilitation?

Neuro rehabilitation (neurological rehabilitation) is specialised therapy that helps people recover function and independence after an injury or illness affecting the nervous system – the brain, spinal cord or nerves. It uses the nervous system’s ability to adapt and relearn (neuroplasticity) through structured, repetitive, task-specific practice.

Who benefits from neuro rehabilitation?

What does a neuro rehabilitation programme involve?

A programme is built around each person’s goals and may include gait training (including robotic gait training), functional electrical stimulation (FES), balance and strength work, task-specific retraining for daily activities, spasticity management coordinated with medical care, and caregiver training. It can be delivered as inpatient (residential) care, daycare, outpatient sessions or at home, depending on the person’s needs.
