There is no fixed number, and any clinic quoting one before assessing you is guessing. What can be given honestly is what determines the number, and what should be happening along the way.

What determines it

A realistic pattern

For a straightforward episode of mechanical back pain, many people are seen a handful of times over a few weeks: assessment and initial treatment, then review and progression, then a check that the self-management plan is working.

Longstanding or recurrent pain generally needs longer, with the emphasis shifting from hands-on treatment toward progressive exercise and load management.

What should happen by session two or three

If none of that has happened, ask directly.

When to question the plan

The honest summary

The aim of physiotherapy for back pain is to make you independent of physiotherapy. If a plan does not appear to be heading that way, it is fair to ask why.
